What is meant by expiry date on water bottle
<By: Wake Up>
Water is a precious natural resource that humans should be grateful for. However, despite the abundance of water on Earth, it is becoming increasingly scarce. More than 97 percent of the Earth's water comes from the oceans, which is not suitable for drinking.
When it comes to drinking water, people often rely on bottled water, especially in situations where carrying their own water is not feasible. But have you ever noticed that water bottles have expiration dates? This may lead to confusion and raise questions about whether water can really expire or if it is safe to drink once the expiration period has passed. Let's delve into what you need to know about water expiration dates.
In general, most drinking water is considered safe for consumption when stored for up to 6 months in a cool and dark place. However, when water becomes carbonated, its flavor may be affected as the gas slowly escapes. From a scientific standpoint, water itself does not easily expire.
However, packaged water can actually have an expiration date, and the reason behind this is the plastic bottle in which it is stored. Typically, water in plastic bottles has a shelf life of around 2 years. When these bottles are exposed to sunlight or heat, the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) material present in the plastic can start leaching into the water, making it potentially hazardous to health and affecting its taste.
Furthermore, packaged water may have an expiration date due to the fact that many companies use the same machinery for packaging water as they do for other beverages such as sodas. Thus, the expiration date is applicable to the packaging itself.
