The world's most expensive cow, a 4-and-a-half-year-old Nelore breed named Viatina-19 FIV Mara Imóveis, has been sold for a staggering $4.3 million, setting a new record. In a recent auction held in Arandú, Brazil, one-third ownership of the cow was sold for 6.99 million real ($1.44 million), contributing to its overall value. This remarkable transaction highlights the exceptional genetic qualities of the Nelore cattle breed.
Nelore cattle are recognized by their striking white fur, loose skin, and a prominent hump above their shoulders. They are renowned for their remarkable resistance to hot weather, thanks in part to their white fur, which aids in heat reflection. Additionally, Nelore cattle possess sweat glands that are twice as large and 30 percent more numerous than those found in most European breeds. Their high metabolism and resilience to various parasitic infections further contribute to their exceptional characteristics.
The breed's reproductive capabilities are also notable. Female Nelore cattle have wider pelvic openings and larger birth canals compared to other breeds, making reproduction easier. Calves from this breed typically require minimal human assistance during birth.
