Well, sending this particular emoji had expensive consequences for one farmer in Saskatchewan, Canada, when he used it in response to a contract sent by text message.

Chris Achter failed to deliver 86 tonnes of flax that grain buyer Kent Mickleborough was looking to purchase in 2021, prompting him to take legal action.

Mickleborough had sent the farmer a draft of the contract, writing "please confirm flax contract", to which Achter responded with the thumbs-up emoji.

However, while Mickleborough believed the emoji had sealed the deal, Achter did not deliver the flax by the date specified.

Despite the farmer arguing that the emoji “was not a confirmation that I agreed with the terms", a judge ruled it amounted to a contractual agreement.

He must now pay C$82,000 ($61,610; £48,310) for failing to fulfil the contract.
